Before Pregnancy

Pregnancy Planning & Preconception Care in Wakad, Pune

A preconception visit helps you start pregnancy as healthy as possible — and gives couples who are struggling to conceive a clear, step-by-step plan.

Thinking about starting or growing your family is a good time to plan ahead. Many of the things that make the biggest difference to a pregnancy happen before conception, which is why a preconception visit is worth the time.

What a preconception visit covers

At your visit, Dr. Supriya Gaikwad will take a full medical and menstrual history and do a general health check. We review any existing conditions — thyroid disorders, diabetes, high blood pressure, PCOS — that can affect pregnancy, and check whether any medicines you take need to be changed before you conceive.

We also talk through the practical side: starting folic acid supplementation, nutrition and healthy weight, exercise, avoiding alcohol and tobacco, and which vaccinations are worth having up to date before pregnancy.

Who should come for a preconception check-up

  • Anyone planning a first pregnancy
  • Women with a previous miscarriage, stillbirth or complicated pregnancy
  • Women with long-term conditions such as diabetes, thyroid disease, epilepsy or hypertension
  • Women with irregular cycles or PCOS
  • Women over 35 who are planning a pregnancy

If you’ve been trying without success

For couples who have been trying to conceive for some time, we offer a structured infertility evaluation: history, examination, ultrasound scanning and the relevant hormonal and other tests, followed by a clear treatment plan explained step by step. Many couples need only simple measures such as timing guidance, treating an underlying condition like PCOS, or ovulation support.

FAQs

Common questions

When should I see a doctor before trying to conceive?

Ideally two to three months before you start trying. This gives time to start folic acid, review any medicines you take, and bring conditions such as thyroid disorders, diabetes or high blood pressure under good control.

Do I need to take folic acid before I am pregnant?

Yes. Folic acid taken before conception and in early pregnancy lowers the risk of neural tube defects in the baby. Your doctor will advise the right dose for you.

When should a couple seek an infertility evaluation?

Generally after a year of regular, unprotected intercourse without conception, or after six months if the woman is 35 or older. Earlier evaluation is sensible if periods are irregular or there is a known medical history.

Does the evaluation involve only the woman?

No. Infertility has causes on both sides, so a proper evaluation looks at both partners, usually starting with simple, non-invasive tests.
